What we believe
I had a very interesting experience last night and I just had to write about it. For the first time in a very long time, I had a conversation with a person not of my faith.
For the most part it was fine, I tried my best to let him know of my personal experiences and testimony and I didn't feel overly defensive or threatened by what he said. Even so, it still caused me great sadness because he didn't really care about what I had to say. It was as if he was having the conversation simply to tell me of all the flaws of my beliefs and just prove that I was wrong.
I am a member of the church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and I always have been. I find peace and joy in living the gospel or in other words, living the lifestyle I have because of what I believe. The person I spoke with believes that the true meaning of life can be found in science and that there really is no purpose in being other than to just live as you see fit.
He didn't really tell me much of what he believed, just a little about how we all came from one cell organisms and evolution. The majority of the conversation was him telling me the flaws in my religion and then me trying to explain why we do things the way we do them.
Even though it wasn't the best experience, I was grateful for it. It really made me think about my beliefs and my feelings reminded me of how much I really did care and know what I believed. It also gave me insight on how to respond in these conversations in the future. It is so important to be considerate of the other person's feelings and to remain respectful.
I know that God lives. I have prayed and felt His influence in my life. I have lived according to His teachings and it has always given me hope to keep moving forward and live the best I can for myself and for others. I know that Jesus Christ is my Savior and Redeemer and that through Him and his atoning sacrifice, we can return to the presence of our Father in heaven. It is through that gift that we can repent of our sins and continue on. God the Father and His Son Jesus Christ appeared to the young boy Joseph Smith in the sacred grove and it is through Joseph Smith that the true gospel of Jesus Christ was restored to the earth. Through the priesthood power given to Joseph Smith, which is the power of God, we have the saving ordinances and covenants that allow us to return to the presence of our Father in Heaven and be eternal families. The Book of Mormon was brought forth by the power of God and is the word of God for us today. I have read it and prayed about it and I know that it is true. President Thomas S. Monson who is the living prophet today of our church has been called of God and what he says is the word of God. I know that he is a true prophet and that he speaks the truth. Temples have been built for us to receive a fullness of joy and participate in ordinances and covenants that are necessary for our salvation.
